Lightning Talks Episode 5: Meet the New Imports – Jarred White & Jared Whale
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Chris "Dicko" Dickens and Harrison Mills catch up with new MK Lightning imports Jarred White (forward) and Jared Whale (goaltender), former teammates at Alaska Anchorage.
The pair reflect on their NCAA careers — White recalling a freshman year behind future Stanley Cup winner Brandon Bussey, and both praising college hockey's relentless pace as ideal pro prep. White describes his shift from winger to a gritty, two-way centre; Whale opens up on recovering from injury and learning from British netminder Jordan Hedley.
They swap banter on music, style, and NHL loyalties (Oilers vs. Flames), and both say they can't wait for the famously loud Lightning crowd. They touch on the club's rebuilt roster and expectations for the season.

ChrisAnd we've got on our screen as well two of our uh non-Bridge trained players, two of our imports today, but I'm gonna let them introduce themselves. So we'll let double R go first.
Jarred WhiteUh hi yeah, my name's uh Jared White. Um originally from Edmonton, Alberta. Uh we're in Canada and uh spent uh spent a season in France last year and excited to uh get back to an English English speaking country for the season here. So looking forward to getting to Billy Keynes.
ChrisBrilliant, good to see you and welcome to the uh podcast.
Jarred WhiteWell, thanks, thanks for having us.
ChrisAnd single.
Jared WhaleUh yeah, I'm Jared Whale. I am from Calgary, Alberta, and I spent last season at University of New Hampshire in uh the United States. So I'm pretty pumped to be here and uh can't wait to get the season rolling.
ChrisBrilliant. Well, listen, thanks to you both for for joining us. I don't know what the time is over there. Is it just after lunchtime for you guys?
Speaker 2About noon, yeah. Yeah, noon.
ChrisOh, okay, got you. Okay, and and double R, you're you're you've already said to us already, you're you're already on the ice because you're you're working in the ice rink every day right now, right?
Jarred WhiteYeah, yeah. I love it, but it's also painful sometimes. So uh the skates get good work, they're pretty much folded in half. But they're kind of like slippers right now, so it's not terrible.
ChrisAnd what about um yourself, Jared? Dump single hour, what are you doing?
Jared WhaleRight now I'm uh I'm on turf care for uh Calgary Golf and Country Club. So just doing a little bit of that to fill the time in in the summer, and then yeah, can't wait to get the season rolling once it once it gets started.
ChrisWhat is it with hockey play? It is a month and a bit. What is it with hockey players that just like you're either on the on the ice during the summer or you're out in a golf course? I know you're working right now, but it's like it's one or the other, right?
Jared WhaleIt's gotta be something with just like swinging the stick, like we just like gravitate towards it almost.
Jarred WhiteNo, it's kind of I stay in the ice rink because I can't golf.
HarrisonSo well, we've got a lot of golfers on the team, so yeah, there are a few golfers on the team.
ChrisBut obviously, I was gonna say I don't know many bad hockey players at golf, if that makes sense. Um, but yeah, there are a couple, so you you will, you know, you will still be in good company when you're over there. There are a couple that really can't swing a stick um or a golf club. They can swing sticks on the Saturday night and a Sunday night golf club, not a chance. Some others, though, like the assistant coach Lewis Lewis Christie. I don't know where he spent his childhood. I know he's Scottish, but fabulous golfer, absolutely fabulous golfer. But good to see you guys. Welcome to the uh welcome to the podcast.
Jared WhaleThanks for having us. Yeah, happy to be here.
ChrisSo, Harrison, do you want to kick us off with a because I know you did a lot of background on these guys?
HarrisonYeah, I mean, I want us to start obviously with the fact that you've both played together. You mentioned it before we joined. Um, but before you got together, Jared Doubler, um, I found out that you played with Brandon Bussey, the Stanley Cup winner, um, in your first NCAA season. Do you remember that at all?
Jarred WhiteUh I I do, yeah. Um, we keep in touch with him a little bit still. Um he actually just got married yesterday, actually, too. So uh he's had quite the summer. Uh but yeah, I mean he uh he he was quite the goalie. Actually, it was interesting um having him in net. He was just he's so good at uh moving around the net, and uh you like almost impossible to score on him low. And actually, probably one of the most similar goalies I had to him after was was Whaler, just in the way Whaler kind of moves around the net. So um, but yeah, I mean uh Bus is he's an interesting character and um one of one of the uh one of just like the great guys in hockey, uh as everybody's kind of seen this past year. Uh so happy for him, and that was uh super cool to see uh him have that success this year.
HarrisonI will say as well, mention about that, as obviously that being your first NCAA season after going up from the uh AJHL, I think it is. Um was that sort of was coming up against someone like Brandon a bit of like a wake-up call of like whoa, just now it gets serious?
Jarred WhiteUh yeah, for sure. I mean, uh our whole team, I think when I was there, we were uh I think we had six NHLers on the roster that year, or five or six guys that have played. Um, so that the pace and the just the attention to detail, having to execute every day, like that was that was kind of eye-opening, uh going from D AJ to that. Um, and I think that's something that I've kind of been able to take with me uh after after Western as well. So uh looking forward to hopefully bringing that over to Milton Keynes as well.
ChrisYou mentioned actually, you know, you talk about the NC and NCAA there. What was what is that like as a league? Because a lot of our fans, you know, they pay a bit of attention to it. I think more you know, focused on the NHL and and maybe a couple of other leagues around that. But what as the NC NCAA, what is that as a league, both as a player? And I guess for you, I'm gonna call you Whalen now, I know your nickname. Um uh and for you as a netminder as well.
Jarred WhiteYeah, I I can speak from forward experience. I mean, I I think the uh you know, the pay the pace of play is probably up there with um like second, third best league in the world, just in terms of um a lot of those guys are going on to play in the AHL, East Coast. Um, you know, you talk to guys that have moved on, and I a lot of them say that you know NCAA is almost harder with uh you know the guys are playing every day. Uh you're getting NHLers in there, you're getting AHL guys in there every day. And uh just you have to be on it every day. You're you're going to school, you're you're practicing every day. There's not really a day off. Um if we had a day off, it was usually an optional skate. So uh yeah, you really have to you have to learn to like really to balance schedule, you have to have a good work ethic, obviously. And uh yeah, it's uh I've learned a lot from it and had a bat blast playing in it. Um I know Weylor probably didn't have as much fun playing in front of uh our team in Alaska or behind our team in Alaska, but uh I know that uh he could probably speak more on that. But yeah, it's uh it's quite the league. It's highly competitive and uh it's a lot of fun to be a part of.
Jared WhaleYeah, I'll I'll just go right off like uh the other Jared, but um it like it was it was quite the jump from like we both played in the same junior league in in Alberta and not at the same time, but like making the jump from that league to obviously Alaska Anchorage for me, and then it would have been Western for Jared with two R's. Um like it was it was really noticeable in like the pace of play. Like you play less games, you only play 34 games for the regular season, and like man, you gotta compete hard every night, and like you gotta bring your best, because if you don't, like obviously as a goalie, like you're gonna get scored on. So like if you're not bringing your best every day, like it's it's a tough league to kind of like not bring a good effort in. Like it's a very effort-based league, and you're not not giving that effort, then like you're not having success there.
ChrisIt it sounds like it's it's you know, the the the spotlight's always on you, isn't it, right? Is that we would that be fair to say? Because with that with at that level, you've got guys that are going off, like you say, into the AHL and um, you know, AHL and so on and so forth. Spotlight is on you. If you're not performing, you're out.
Jarred WhiteYeah, exactly. I think mistakes are punished in that league, heavy even with the schedule. Like Whaler said, 30-game schedule, you lose you lose two games on a weekend and your season's over in October.
Jared WhaleYeah, like I saw uh so when me and uh Whitey played on Anchorage, uh my second year, um U and H, the team I eventually transferred to, uh lost against like an unranked army team and uh that ruined their season. Like they were top 12 in the country, and then they dropped to like 20th and couldn't get back up to get into the tournament. So like that that one loss ruined their whole season.
ChrisYeah, sounds uh sounds sounds pretty harsh. So we got so we've got sort of one nickname. We've got um we've got Whaler. Is it is it is it is it YT your nick? Because that was one of my questions I got actually. Team nicknames is is it YT and Waylor? Is that is that what we're going with now?
Jared WhaleUh I think, yeah, usually.
ChrisYeah.
Jared WhaleIt's all right. You're either adding like uh an R or Y or an S at the end of the last name. That's like usually your hockey nickname over in North America. I don't know what it is in the UK, but it's what it is for us.
ChrisYeah, it's an it's it's normally it can be a no over here. So my name's uh surname's Dickens, and I'm called Dicko. So I I don't even answer to anything else, I don't think. Now it's been so long since you know, since I've uh had that. I don't know what we could do with Harrison actually. Harrow, does that work? I don't I don't know.
HarrisonUh no, I just call Milsey.
ChrisUh Milsy. We'll do Milsey. But yeah, I don't know, I don't know whether you know about Milton Keynesy. Have you had much contact with the with the team so far? Are you in sort of WhatsApp groups or stuff like that? Have you heard much about the from the team or about Milton Keynes?
Jarred WhiteUh I think we've got a group chat going now, and the Milton Keynes guys are a little bit more active in it than I am. Uh pretty quiet guy, usually at least to start. But uh uh yeah, I heard a little bit about Milton Keynes. Uh I don't know uh Wheelers heard, but I I just heard there's like 130 roundabouts. So yeah, that's that's always exciting. First time I'm hearing about that.
HarrisonYeah, I think his new two.
Jarred WhiteThat was my cool, that was my cool fact of the day. Um but yeah, I've heard awesome things about the rank and the fans. Um just in talking with Pete uh prior to signing and stuff, and uh talking with friends in the league. Uh so uh yeah, I'm excited about the roundabouts and then the hockey as well.
ChrisSo and talking about that actually, just that brings us on nicely when you you when you were both talking with with Pete and um you know Whitey, it's probably a different situation to to you as a as a as a forward, and we'll come on to uh Whaler in a second because you know it's probably there's obviously a different rule now for in this league for for netminers, you've probably seen that. But what were the what were the discussions like with Pete? I mean, obviously you don't have to go into too much detail, but how did those approaches happen?
Jarred WhiteYeah, I um I think it was more so um I mean I had a uh agent at the time um kind of working through different options at the end of the year. Um and um yeah, I think uh he had reached out to Peter. Um Pete reached out to him and you know uh it kind of just became uh mutual interest in terms of um you know, Pete uh did a good job like selling the program, selling uh what the league is and kind of the opportunity that could present itself here. And um that to me was exciting. Uh and uh of course uh it always feels good when there's mutual interest both ways. So uh it was a fairly quick process, I think, for uh uh for me there at the end of the season. Uh and um yeah, I just uh you know Pete did a good job of uh kind of laying it out, uh what it was gonna look like here in Milton Keynes. And uh had uh a couple good conversations and felt like this was the best place to be this season.
ChrisSo awesome. And yeah, it is it is genuinely great to have you have you here on the roster. And uh was single out. What what about yourself?
Jared WhaleYeah, I was kind of I was the same story for the most part. Like um Pete reached, or I guess like the agent reached out, or Pete reached out, or something like that. I don't know the like the full story, but uh anyways, got in contact with Pete and like he was I really liked what he had to say, and like I did obviously, I did my little bit of homework on Milton Keynes myself, and like really loved how like the fans were at games, and like it just looked like a really fun place to play. So like you didn't have to do a lot of selling for me. Like, I kind of wanted my first experience like to be in an English-speaking country as well. Like, I know I've had some buddies that have gone off to like uh Sweden, Norway, and they said, like, man, like that language Barry, you gotta like find someone that speaks English, and like, or like even like Jared and uh or Whitey in France, like yeah, I'd be out to lunch. I don't know like a French, like I could I could say salute, and uh that's about it.
ChrisI I do wonder to be fair, because you know, I I know it I I know some Canadians go across there, and of course, that some of the for some of them the second language is French, isn't it? So it's it's it becomes a little bit easier, but it's not it isn't that easy for everybody. It's not it's not that you know it's not that natural. And and integrating is a massive thing, isn't it? When you when you're so far away from home, especially maybe for the first time as well.
Jared WhaleYeah, I'd I'd say like we've kind of been moved away from home. Like I've been moved away from home since I was 17, 16. So like you kind of get used to it, the fact that like you don't have like your parents around, you gotta make good decisions, obviously, and like you're cook cooking for yourself, like you gotta clean up, like you kind of grow up a little bit faster than I probably would have if I just like stayed living at home with my parents. But then, like, yeah, like coming obviously playing in the NCAA, everybody speaks and goes there, so it's like the culture change is not like super super different, but I know Whitey can probably speak more about like moving over to Europe and like his experiences there, but like I'm excited that I'm like coming to an English speaking place.
ChrisWhy, how was he how was he going over to France for the first time? Was it was it tough for you?
Jarred WhiteI I mean yeah, I guess you could say France's second language, but it's only because gibberish doesn't count, so um it's pretty uh it's a bit of a challenge. You you learn pretty quick. Um, and like we did learn French in school a little bit, so you can you can get by, but um yeah, uh full-on conversations with uh people were pretty pretty few and far between in French. So um yeah, it's definitely uh it was just another challenge. Um kind of like I enjoyed France. I really like being there, uh beautiful country, but uh yeah, it's just it was another challenge to add to coming overseas. And um, you know, I enjoyed the challenge and that everything came with it, but uh yeah, it's definitely uh I think it's gonna be a little bit more comfortable, at least uh being in uh English speaking country.
ChrisSo let's hope so. Let's let's hope so. So if you Harrison, you got any more uh questions?
HarrisonYeah, I was gonna say for um Jared Singhela, um, one of the things that I noticed about yourself was that at 18 or 19 years old, you were playing against like NHL draft picks like Taylor McCar, who obviously brother is um uh Kale McCarr. Um and so that at just 18 or 19 years old, what's that like when you're still so young, you're one of the younger players on the roster, and you're coming up against talents that are now close to winning championships.
Jared WhaleYeah, that was uh I played in Brooks in the AJHL, which was like a very good, like highly touted junior league or junior team over in Canada. Uh, I was fortunate enough to play there actually. Like, I had a great experience. I loved every minute of it. And like, yeah, like you said, like the players there were the best you could get. I I tried to do a count the other day, forgotten the real number, but of like guys I played with on that team that now have signed like NHL contracts, and I think it's over eight eight of them on that team. So I got pretty fortunate to kind of play with that caliber of player from such a young age, and like obviously like got to move up, and like when you're playing in the NCAA, you just play against those guys all the time. But like getting to experience that like every day in practice was definitely a very cool experience for myself.
HarrisonI suppose Dick all got into it because obviously he you used to be a netminder.
ChrisYeah, yeah, that very low beer league. I've got to say, it's not, you know, it's not even it's not even beer league, it's after you've drunk a lot of beer league, you know, it's that kind of thing. But yeah, a very, very low level. But I've kind of I've I've I've felt a little the little bit of the pain that you you know that netminders have to feel because the puck always finds its way through some padding, right?
Jared WhaleYeah, there's always just that that one squeaker that it's like ah that one didn't feel great, great on me. But yeah, it's some of those guys just have a knack, like they just the puck just goes in for them. Whitey's actually one of those guys, but in practice he would just oh is he one of those guys that gets you up in a warm up and name everything at your head? No, it was hard though. Heinhard never hit my head, but high and hard. We had some we had a couple guys on Anchorage that were pretty bad with the the warm-up shot headshots.
ChrisIt is a it is the worst thing in the world.
Jarred WhiteI think it's only fired like one or two pucks at me, so in in two years, that's not too bad.
ChrisThat's not too bad.
Jarred WhiteUm our other goal, it was worse, I think.
ChrisWas he really?
Jarred WhiteOh, he would he would yeah, he would just fire pucks head high at you in the middle of graphics.
Jared WhaleHe actually came over here, played in the EIHL.
ChrisWas he was he the guy that um was that Nolan Kent used to Yeah, Nolan Kent came he came over to Comedy Blaze a couple of seasons ago, didn't he? I think he only stayed around for for one season.
Jared WhaleYeah, yeah.
ChrisI'd I'd seen a couple of reports about him that um yeah, um pretty pretty good net minder, but um probably more screws loose than most, you know, that kind of thing. A bit of a loose family. But whether I was gonna say, I was gonna ask you about your your net mining, and and we'll come on to Whitey in a second about the style of play. But with your style of play, what as a netminder, what what style of play do you adopt? Are you are you you know full on butterfly hybrid? I know you know some of you know over in Canada that there tends to be a little bit of a mix that we don't maybe have in Europe.
Jared WhaleYeah, I guess uh we don't usually use like butterfly or like hybrid to kind of like quantify your playing side. I'd probably say like I'm a little bit of a hybrid. I like to move around on my feet, and then uh like obviously, like as being like a little bit undersized, like I like to present myself as big as possible, and like you're gonna be much bigger on your feet than when you're on your knees. So yeah, I just try to like keep that, but I think like for me, movement's probably like one of the most important things, and that's what I've kind of like strive to be is like one of or the best moving goalie I can be growing up, and like I feel like I've gotten like pretty good at that. So I'm pretty happy with like where my game is at the current moment.
ChrisYeah, and what about um and when you when you talk about the move movement, well, I'm I'm just thinking about your lateral movement. Are you uh do you tend to sort of push off low on the on on the posts or are you using your edges at that at that point when you're at say for example, if you're right back on the line?
Jared WhaleYeah, it's a a lot of it has to do with like the edge work, I'd say. Like that just like comes with like a lot of technique, is like you're kind of using like your edge, you gotta get good with like turning and using your edges and like shifting your weight to kind of pop up out of your posts and like go across post to post. Like, that's probably one of the most difficult things to learn as a goalie in hockey is like just like good solid post work because there's just so many minute details about it. Um, like getting your toe like into the post and then like using your edges getting flat depending on like where the player is in that angle. Like, there's just a lot to it. I could go on on about it, but like gets pretty boring for most. So I'll save them a little bit.
ChrisOne thing I I mean there is a loaded question, but reason I'm asking. because one of the one of the things you're probably used to playing playing mainly in Canada for example that your your net posts and your moorings tend to be they're fairly deep they're not they're not as loose um we do have a bit of an issue in some of the rinks here here in here in the UK where they're not always as deep and the and the posts will come off if you if you put a bit of weight behind them when you're pushing off. And I think sometimes the problem is that you know because we've had some great net miners in this league before now and they've always been accused of deliberately pushing the goal off is the you know the net office morings and that's not always the case so um just be a little bit wary of that when you when you when you're over you might want to look at that in certain rinks because you might wonder why you know fans are be giving you grief in during the game but if you if your net keeps coming off they'll they'll let you they'll let you know. Not not the home fancy way fans.
Jared WhaleI'm a little bit uh I don't want to say heavy but like I'm 195 pounds or 193 now and yeah like growing up playing before we hit like junior hockey it was all of like those like shallow pegs and like I was the worst at like pushing my post off it's not purposeful I swear it's not purposeful.
ChrisYou can get away with it if you tried anyway yeah we yeah yeah yeah we've got it on tape now to head the season so whatever you do now doesn't count it's fine if we've got disclaimer in there not on purpose just heads up I I do push them off a little bit now and then so might have to repeat that clip for for for other teams we'll put other teams in the league we'll put that on loop for during when we're doing the when we're doing the broadcast and everything else.
Jarred WhiteSo YT what about you just just describe your your style of play for us because when I interviewed Pete he was he was actually really really excited about you signing it you know with the speed and everything else but the style of your play uh yeah I yeah yeah I I've learned how to skate over the past couple of years which has been nice um sorry I'm getting attacked by a WhatsApp call um yeah I I um I I'd like to think I've more of uh turned into kind of like a two-way uh center um last couple years I uh when I played with Whaler actually I was a winger um so just kind of over the last uh two seasons here kind of switched over uh played down the middle but I played on the wing basically my whole life and uh I've always liked getting in on the fore check. Yeah I I like I like playing in kind of the the greasier areas of the game you know I like getting in the corners and and battling and if uh if I can hit a guy you know I I like to do that. It's one of my favorite things to do actually.
ChrisSo um but yeah I just uh it's kind of nicely last year I kind of got the confidence to play a little bit more of an uh offensive game and uh be a little bit more of a a play driver you know I feel like I have a pretty good uh vision IQ for the game so um yeah I've just kind of been uh kind of work working on that and uh using my speed kind of just to create havoc excellent good stuff and and and um just coming back to you waiter about you I don't want to go into detail about your your injury and I know you've had that you you know you've had that time off injured but how is that work progressing to get yourself fit and everything now I'm I'm obviously I'm thinking now obviously you wouldn't have signed you wouldn't have been ready to go but you you'll be doing the level best you can be to hit the ice and get going.
Jared WhaleYeah that was it was definitely like a a scary moment for myself but like I've recovered pretty well um like I'm now training four times a week and like skating a couple times too so I mean everything's feeling good like my neck and my back are all feeling good like I still go to physio for it but it's pretty cleared up it's just kind of like a little maintenance work here and there.
ChrisSo yeah feeling feeling good and and whilst I've whilst I've got you again I'm just I just want to go back to the I mentioned a rule change earlier in the league you'll have seen that the you know about the minutes around um British netminders not you know the the the British netminders having to to play I think 600 minutes over the course of the season um I think we've you know you uh you'll you'll see him when you meet him but I think what you've you're joining one of the best British net minders in you know in the country I think is in uh Jordan Headley are you are you looking forward to working together in that tandem oh yeah yeah I've only I've only heard great things about heads so or I hope that's his nickname at least yeah okay perfect yeah I've only heard great things and like obviously like when you're goalie like you're kind of big into like the stats and stuff so I go look in his look at his stats I'm like wow like this guy's had quite the career so far in pro hockey so very excited to just kind of learn the ropes from him like obviously I've only ever played amateur hockey um but yeah I'd love to love to work with him um kind of hopefully you can show me the ropes and like teach me a couple things maybe that the pro side has that the amateur side didn't so I'm pretty pumped about it. Brilliant yeah I think it's yeah I think it's gonna be very very good tandem as we uh as we go throughout season I keep keep referring to as what a young net miner but it's really spooky he's not so young now as it's just just me getting old I think that's all it is.
HarrisonNo he's 31 he's your kid now I know it's scary it is it is scary.
ChrisIt is really scary said it in the interview the other um that we had the other week as well it's just like I coached him when he was like 19 yeah I yeah I the the frightening thing is I can remember you know watching years ago watching you know kids playing juniors and some of those kids now have you know a couple of them have got their rafters uh their shirts up in the rafters in the ring and that's they've they're they're long retired that's really that's really scary I'm just really showing my eyes there.
HarrisonI always keep thinking I'm like 19 years old still like freshman in the NCAA like it just like flew by and like now I'm like oh 23 like I the other day I was throwing a baseball my shoulders sorted out what is going on like what would you say that but you are also actually as of right now you are the youngest non-British trained player that signed in the NIHL so oh really that yeah so that alone says a lot about yourself but does that play on your mind at all age or are you just is it inexperienced?
Jared WhaleI think because I was pretty uh pretty young going into like junior hockey um in Brooks and then obviously like I was I was the youngest team or wow youngest kid on the team for two years at Anchorage right or no second youngest this second year. I thought you were the youngest I think you were the youngest both years unless one of our freshmen was younger but I think we had any refreshing yeah but like you kind of just learned that like age doesn't really have to play a role in like how it's just kind of like once you get on the ice like age is irrelevant. Like anybody can score anybody can skate anybody can save pucks so like at the end of the day like I found like age I never really thought about age when I was playing I'm gonna I'm gonna ask you both a question now going back to your both your playing days here if you can remember this.
Jarred WhitePut you on the spot a little bit uh which of the two of you had the best taste in music me a hundred percent yeah it's probably it's probably not me but that's okay I live in my own little world why why what sort of stuff do you listen to well I was I was the acreage for a little bit for a year I think yeah you can get the young guys to listen to the 2000s classic rock and stuff that was they didn't they weren't getting on board with that very often maybe sneaking in on Monday rock maybe sneak creed in it creed in if I could scream on the 2000s classic rock is crazy.
HarrisonI know it's bunkers right well for Whaler it's classic for okay and um I guess going on from that then really uh out of the two of you who's the who's the most snappy dresser I actually don't know I I'm a pretty bad dresser like I wear just like plain black or like my suit's just like grey i think I think Whitey's got it yeah I think I think I don't want to pump my own tires but I think I I think I can take that one I think I'll take that one yeah I'm not a great got a couple good dressers in the in the team uh you know Elliot Lewis will take that crown and try to keep it so see if you can uh take it off of him my day to day is not great game day fits are good day to day is not great it's comfort isn't it yeah Elliot Elliot Lewis isn't bad but I I'd put Sean Norris up there as well he he he he he looks like he looks around he's to he's not shopping on Timu or Sheen or anything like that that's for certain yeah no but I'm gonna do it's outlets start we did do a uh a TikTok last season where the players ranked who they thought was the best dressed and Elliot and Sean were the two that were rated the best dressed so see if you can get on that list.
ChrisStill working on the Euro style is tough adapting from sweaters and you can bring our our blue jeans cow bring the cowboy boots cowboy hat over so we've got to turn up to training like that or something you've got to tell yeah you've got to turn up training rock up to train like that but but don't forget you know we're in Britain right so from October onwards it's freezing but you'll know all about that anyway um I was gonna ask you another thing as well um I guess when we're putting you on up just asking you questions off the hoof and on the spot um who are your NHL teams who do you support who do you watch? Uh oilers pretty big oil oilers fan yeah I'm I'm the opposite I'm on Calgary Flames so we got a pretty good I remember the first two times we like first two years we were together we had pretty good rivalry arguments about who was better and it was obviously the Oilers but man I just hope for the flames yeah well I I do know we've got um we've got a fair few oilers fans in the in the lightning fan base we've got a few flames as well but I think oilers probably probably take it I think for for obvious reasons as well there's an awful lot of um lightning fans in the Milton Keynes because it just you know they only have to shut one word yeah um they could do it at two o'clock in the morning over here as well as they can at seven o'clock on a Saturday night but uh what have you heard about the crowds in Milton Keynes I know you've done a little bit of homework about you talk talked earlier um white about the you know the rink is pretty pretty good um I mean we like it um what have you heard about what have you heard about the crowds uh big thing for me I heard like uh the energy is uh like they're kind of going all game uh you can hear it um kind of on on a couple of the YouTube videos and stuff right you can you can hear them through the broadcast right so um I I think that's actually a a big change from North America for uh for me was you know the fans are always they're they're always going right it's whether it's the that snare drum which basically if it's behind the bench they'll blow your ears out first game or uh but I I love the energy and um yeah you can you can tell you can just tell on the on the video and watching some of the games back that uh you know they're they're there to support the team they love the team and uh I I think that that helps with the energy uh with the team too.
Jarred WhiteI I know I love I love playing in away barns that are packed and I love playing at home when it's packed. So um yeah it's a little bit different than like the college student sections per se. But uh love love that they're just they're yelling screaming doing whatever they can the whole game. So uh just it seems like a like a great atmosphere to be a part of.
ChrisYeah.
Jared WhaleWhat about you by yeah I kind of heard the same thing. Like I'm pretty excited to kind of hear the whole rink just like that constant buzz the whole time. Uh I I actually I was telling my uh my parents like oh yeah it's a lot like like European football over there like they'll just chant away the whole game and it's like like it looks like a ton of fun. Like I'd love to like go see that like kind of experience that and yeah like the college it was hard to match the college atmosphere and like if you play in North America you go go play professional like the rank's quiet unless you score basically so um I'm pretty excited to like kind of have that buzz in the rank the whole time uh that was pretty cool.
ChrisSo I'm excited to kind of like keep that rolling almost yeah I will warn you guys you will both get a chance yeah you'll get your own song you'll get your own song very very quickly probably before even the the season even starts I'd imagine um yeah you everybody gets their own song they always do that but you know on a game night yeah it is rocking we've got um there's a there's a whole drum section up in um block 11 it's not just one snare drum snare drum white it's a whole host of snares bass and everything else you you know unless you're drumming you don't want to sit near them but they're not above the bench that's the good news um yeah and and and the whole rink is just you know there's there's sound bouncing off every off every surface in the ring when it when it really is rocking and I think the good thing what guys have said before when they've played for this for for many years when you actually where you where your locker room is that's right underneath one of the one of the stands and you can hear that noise before you even you know before you even come out on the ice so it's a real um you know it really gets you before you actually even step out onto the ice so yeah yeah I think you'll love it and have you been told I know um I think why you said you've got friends already playing in the league you've got um uh yeah what what have they told you about a couple what what have they told you about the the various rinks around the league yeah I think uh yeah well my one buddy played in uh Solway last year um okay so uh obviously a little bit smaller barn but um kind of same idea right uh I think the fans are just very passionate like right there a little bit it doesn't seem like a lot of these teams are in uh massive cities right outside of uh maybe you know Sheffield right so I think a lot of those fans are uh excited to see see hockey and and they're hockey fans right uh I I've heard that every pretty much every ice surface is a little bit different size which is probably not something excited to say yeah not something you get in North America it's very standard um but I got a taste of that last year as well so college hockey they're all different sizes too yeah yeah that's true yeah um so but like there's some rinks here like I wait I don't know if we've seen so like the Solway rink is the middle circle touches both blue lines really it's like yeah it's kind of like um oh gosh what's that yeah yeah yeah yeah you're almost you're almost if you if you've if you're playing one way you're almost offside as soon as you come off the bench you've got to be really careful about your changes.
HarrisonWow uh and the benches as well some some of the benches were right next to each other but then sometimes like I think it's uh Romford's ring where the benches are basically in each zone so you get to the second period and it's a very long change.
ChrisYeah so we had a rank last year with no penalty boxes so you just sat in between the players' benches and there's no walls either so they just yeah we've we've we've we've we've got one like that um that's that's Peterborough yeah um you'll do the same now on a and they're also I guess you could call it call them our local rivals so um just that game can get a little bit feisty. Um I think that's probably an understatement especially with the you know uh the way that the the squads are building now have you looked around the league and looked at any of the other squads and seen what they're building or are you just focusing on what you're doing uh it looked a little bit obviously I know uh because my buddy uh one friend signed in uh he might have gone to Peterborough I can't remember where he signed but um and then a teammate I played with last year is in Swindon so kind of been uh uh looking around it it looks like um you know a lot a lot of these teams are you know grabbing seem to be grabbing higher caliber players um from overseas so that's always good to bring the competition up right so um yeah it's gonna be a competitive year um from everything I've heard it sounds like we're gonna be a really competitive team and we you know say to hopefully bring that to fruition right so um yeah keep keep a little bit of tabs but nothing crazy yeah I think Pete's um you know Pete's put together a a pretty a a pretty good sea uh side this season and you know there's I I think in Milton Keynes there's always this level of expectation and also the league are always looking inwards the other teams because you know we've we've got the the the biggest dependencies in Milton Keynes you know that come some are coming really really close to that now they're really building now but you know when we've got a supporters club that you know build on that and support the club in the way that they do it we you know it does give us the opportunity to keep building and building and building I think you know I think there is that kind of level of expectation I guess without putting too much pressure on anybody's shoulders but you know um we look back at last season and for whatever reason that didn't quite work out um but I think everybody's raring to go for for this coming season it is only literally a few weeks away now it's not that far yeah yeah I like kind of what Whitey said like we're both pretty excited with like how the team's looking and like sometimes like obviously with like last year I was just taking a peek and like sometimes it's just like either you got too many cooks in the kitchen or you got like just like doesn't the whole team just doesn't gel.
Jared WhaleIt's just like kind of sometimes the way it works and like which sucks but it does happen from time to time.
HarrisonYeah yeah it's one of those things yeah and it's a lesson as well isn't it so it it happens to every team I thought of you you guys might have had it yourselves as well where you've been a part of a team where it's just not happened for whatever reason.
ChrisYeah yeah like take the Edmunds for example they have the best player in the world and just I can't get it done yeah that's other we got other issues so I'm trying to air out dirty laundry about Edmund yeah yeah talking about um you know twitching sports talking about um you know best players in the world and stuff like did did either of you guys did you get into the World Cup at all or did you did you bother watching or was it just sort of quite a few games yeah it's uh it was entertaining until the last game um but every everything else seemed to be pretty uh pretty pretty fun to watch that third place game was kind of crazy the other day so uh got it got into it a little bit I got a I have a Canada soccer jersey now so we'll put that away for four years I'm sure but um it was entertaining it was cool that it was on like during the day for us so we could if you kind of sit down you could just watch you know three games back to back so that was pretty nice unfortunately most of the time when the games were on like it was kind of like what was it mid-morning maybe early afternoon and like obviously I'm working those days so like I couldn't catch a lot of games I caught like one Canada game and then like half of another one when they're in the round of what is it 16 32 30 32 I think it was this time around yeah they changed we're not we're not that good yeah it's okay Whitey you can put your Canada shirt away for four years I I I got my Scotland shirt out for the first time in like like almost 20 years this time round so I was allowed to do that.
HarrisonHold on you've hidden that from us um but yeah um Harrison you got any more questions for the guys before they uh I mean I think the the one thing that I'd want to just put to both of you is just a message to the Lightning fans from yourselves and just what can the Lightning fans expect of you and yeah just speak to them.
Jared WhaleWait that you want first on this one up with something that I haven't said already.
Jarred WhiteYeah I don't know I I I think they can expect some like some high energy from me um big saves like I think Whitey can kind of attest to it like I I make a lot of big saves at big times so I'll give them something to cheer about and uh I mean the energy that they'll give to us we'll give back to them so I mean I'm pretty pretty excited for the season to start in like a month so yeah awesome yeah I I think I think we're both uh pretty excited to get there so we we uh chat a little bit kind of through the summer so uh yeah I can definitely attest like Waylor Wailer's gonna be a heck of a goalie for us and uh he's uh he's saved my skin more more times than I can count so um but uh yeah for me personally just really excited to be a part of the team and um you know just get going and looking forward to uh I think it's been a while since I've been on a real competitive team so excited to get going and and have a shot at uh doing some damage this year.
ChrisSo brilliant that's that sounds absolutely awesome. And and when do you both when do you both fly in? Is it the end of is it mid-August or end of August?
